New Glarus Historical Society Partners with the Chalet of the Golden Fleece - May 2024

The New Glarus Historical Society (NGHS) and the Chalet of the Golden Fleece, two historical Swiss landmarks in New Glarus, are collaborating in multiple ways. You can now purchase, at either location or the Chamber of Commerce, 418 Railroad Street, a special adult ticket for $15 that provides admission to both locations. That’s a savings of $7!

Also, watch for the PBS Wisconsin Auction 2024, which will be held Memorial Day weekend through June 9th. The NGHS and the Chalet of the Golden Fleece have donated 3 sets of two of these special-priced tickets that you can bid on!

Behind the Scenes at the Village - March 2024

We spend the winter months planning and preparing for the open season. This winter, one of our big projects was replacing the roof on the Cheese Factory. We'd like to thank Corbin Judd for the wonderful job he did with the project! Planning is ongoing for replacing cedar shake shingles on several other buildings.

“Why Old Places Matter” - Historical Society Members’ Annual Meeting - March 2024

The New Glarus Historical Society members’ Annual Meeting was held on March 17, 2024. The guest speaker was David Desimone from the Wisconsin Historical Society’s Speakers Bureau, and is Site Director for Black Point Estate in Lake Geneva.

David presented a thought-provoking slide presentation, exploring the reasons that old places matter to people. Although people often feel very deeply about the old places of their lives, they don’t have the words to express why. Mr. Desimone brought these ideas together in evocative language and with examples of local, regional, and national "old places."

All individuals are encouraged to join the New Glarus Historical Society, which would ensure invitations to events such as this presentation.

Historical Society Purchases Archival Software - February 2024

The Historical Society, having been in existence for 85 years, is fortunate to own numerous donated artifacts, books, photographs, and other archival materials. The Society, through a generous grant from the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin, has purchased PastPerfect archival software. The software will allow for the Society to document and manage all the many items that it owns. The project will take several years but is an exciting addition to the Museum and Archives.

One of the Newest Herd Members of the New Glarus Cow Parade - August 2023

Here is Buttercup (Butterblume in German), the Historical Society’s cow, who will greet visitors in front of the Entrance Building, once the painting and sealing are complete. The two areas on either side of the front steps will be landscaped as well to make a welcoming “home” for her.
